Requirements

A school leaving certificate or its equivalent. If you do not have this certificate but are exceptionally talented, you may be accepted at the discretion of the admissions committee.

Examination

The entrance exam tests your visual creativity, drawing skills and originality. It begins with a fifteen-minute interview with the admissions committee that consists of a teacher and two students.

It involves:
- Discussing your motivation and your general interests.
- Assessing the work that you bring with you. This can consist not only of completed pieces but also of sketches and designs that provide insight into your creative process.
- Assessing the results of the home assignment. This is a design assignment that will be sent to you once you have applied. You will complete it at home and will bring it with you to the entrance exam.

Depending on the result of this interview, you will be invited to take the exam’s practical section, which will be held the next day and will last from 10 am to 4 pm.

In principle, there are two rounds of admissions, which take place in February and April. A different regulation applies for entering the higher years of the full-time courses. Further information about this is available from the Student Affairs Office (studentenzaken@artez.nl)

Fashion is a fascinating and diverse profession, and today there are more opportunities than ever to develop a wide variety of talents. This fact is central to our Fashion Design-course in Arnhem. We do not aim to churn out a single type of standard designer, rather we strive to educate people to meet the basic needs of every market and to acquire a wide variety of skills: people who are flexible and have a broadly-based vision. In addition, each student specialises in an area that reflects his or her personal talents and fascinations.

This means that as a student on our course, your training will equip you either to be a designer of couture or of jeans, to work with your own label or for a company, and to focus either on the avant-garde or on the mass market. However, your talents may lie elsewhere: in drawing, for instance, or photography or theory. Many possibilities are created by supervising each student in a way that becomes increasingly individual during the four years of his or her course. Here, our objective is that students should learn to discover and deploy their own abilities. This also constitutes the basic condition required for practising your future profession in the best possible way. And it is through active experience that the students on our fashion course acquire skills and a personal perspective on the phenomenon of fashion. In addition, they receive mental coaching, which entails learning to understand yourself and to gain the confidence needed to hold your own in the professional world.

Fashion Design is more than simply earning a living, it is a profession that you love. But it is not easy, and this is something that you will discover during your course. Consistently high standards are maintained in all areas and this, along with hard work, is one of the secrets behind our success. If you opt for fashion, you must be prepared to go for it, you must have talent and discipline, you need to be flexible and to have critical faculties, daring, resilience and determination, curiosity and passion.

In terms of public opinion, fashion has only just begun to acquire the position it deserves: to be placed on a par with professions such as graphic design and industrial design. The typically-Dutch prejudice that fashion is an activity for superficial air heads is finally beginning to evaporate along with the assumption that the Netherlands is incapable of providing the right climate for the creation of first class fashion design. Our goal is to demolish these stereotypes and to provide a positive contribution to the discourse surrounding the fashion of the 21st century.

The department also constitutes a closely-knit community of individuals who work together intensively. These collaborations are sometimes between the students themselves but can also involve members of the teaching staff. The students are each other’s critics, they help each other with assessments, the open day, the Arnhem Collection show and, of course, with the degree show - the highpoint of each year.

The course focuses on the designing and production of clothes along with a general understanding of the phenomenon of fashion. The emphasis is on developing creativity. This is closely followed by practical and crafts-based aspects and, to a lesser extent, by theoretical knowledge. Each year, the normal timetable is interrupted by a production period that lasts for several weeks where the students realise their own designs. The year is divided into two terms.
The course is characterised by the many contact hours, particularly during the first two years. A great deal of course time is spent at the Academy, and intensive communication is essential both with the teachers and with your fellow students.
Broadly speaking, the four course years are as follows:

First Year: Learning and Unlearning

There are many experimental design assignments. Fixed ideas are undermined; individual and original concepts are stimulated. Students are introduced to visual subjects in general and to fashion in particular. These subjects consist of: Fashion Design, Experimental Design, Fashion Illustration, Textiles, Pattern Drawing, Production, Visual Grammar, Fashion & Costume, Computer Skills and Art History.
During the first year, students may be refused admission to the following year as based on course results. This decision is binding.

Second Year: The Basis of Craftsmanship

The year begins with a course excursion abroad that lasts for a number of days.
Here, the emphasis is on broadening the student’s knowledge, both general and professional, and on developing professional skills. The subjects consist of Fashion Design, Fashion Illustration, Pattern Drawing, Production, Technical Drawing, Textiles, Printdesign, Graphic Design, Computer Skills, Fashion & Culture and Art History. It is an extremely demanding year with even more contact hours than the first year. It is quite normal to have a course load of sixty or more hours a week.

Third Year: Contact with Professional Practice

The first term consists of a full program of classes in Design, Knitting, Fashion Illustration, Pattern Drawing, Moulage and the minor Collection Arnhem: a project where third-year students work together on designing a collection of clothes, which they produce as samples and then style, present and sell. The project is concluded with a show that is organised and designed completely by the students themselves, and is presented to the public at a suitable location. Information: www.collectie-arnhem.nl Students must also write their Art History papers.
During the second term, all the students will spend three months attending a work placement either at home or abroad. The third year is concluded with an intensive design workshop that combines the experiences of both the Arnhem Collection and the work placement.

Fourth Year: Finals

Design, design, design! The entire year is dedicated to evolving the student’s personal touch. Here, four design teachers emphasise different aspects of the profession and supervise the design process so that it results in a balanced degree collection. Much attention is also devoted to the development of a presentation folder. Through meetings with professionals, every effort is made to prepare the students for the world that they will enter once they have graduated. External experts are involved in the finals assessment along the fashion and design teachers. The grand finale consists of the presentation of the degree collections in the annual show, which is held at the beginning of July and is open to both the press and the public.

Collectie Arnhem 2010, Amsterdam International Fashion Week, January 29th 2010

http://www.collectiearnhem.nl/

The bachelor department Fashion of ArtEZ Academy of Visual Arts Arnhem has a long and successful history. In 1953 the legendary Elly Lamaker set up the Department of Fashion Design and Fashion Illustration at the Arnhem Academy of Art. With little by way of resources, a handful of students had to prove fashion’s right to exist on all fronts: vis-à-vis the existing art courses, the business world and all the comparable courses abroad. They succeeded, and our students have continued to succeed.

Our Fashion Department has constantly grown since then. About 125 students, both Dutch and foreign, are currently taught by a qualified team of at least twenty teachers. There are two first–year classes, each of which are attended by 23 students. The higher years consist of approximately 25 students. Apart from teaching, most of our teachers are also active on a professional level. We run one of the best fashion courses in Europe, our students regularly scoop the most coveted prizes and their achievements receive a great deal of media attention. Arnhem graduates are now working in all segments of the market.

Following their finals, a high proportion of former students have succeeded in making a name for themselves in many areas of the fashion world, both at home and abroad.

Here are a few examples:

Viktor & Rolf, who also employ Suleyman Demir, Oscar Raaijmakers and Eefje Frankenhuis; Lucas Ossendrijver is the chief designer at Lanvin hommes; Sander Lak is the menswear designer for Balmain; Hans Demoed and Geert de Rooij have conquered the world with The People of the Labyrinths; in the early 1990s, Alexander van Slobbe achieved major success with his Orson & Bodil and So labels, and was one of the first Dutch designers to present his work on the Paris catwalks; Jan Schrijver has set up the successful brand Gsus, which also employs Ursula Hasham, Mette Visser and Wieteke van Riet; Wilbert Das is the creative director of Diesel in Italy, and other Diesel-designers are Peter Kempkens, Diederik Verbakel, Marieke Holthuis and Natascha Stolz; Francisco van Benthum, Daryl van Wouw, Antoine Peters, Jeroen van Tuyl, Elja Lintsen, Aziz Bekkaoui, Edwin Oudshoorn, Iris van Herpen all started their own label under their own name; the Turnover team mainly consists of Arnhem graduates, specifically: Mari Buismans, Christine Vos, Baukje Bies and Barbora Papsikova; Pamela Spruyt is designing prints for O’Neill; Gerjan de Gilde is the chief designer at Stills; Frank Muytjens designs for J.Crew; Olga Basten, Wendy Heijne and Anneloes Brunt design for H&M in Sweden; Yeliz Yakar designs the pret-a-porter line for Mart Visser; Caroline Melzig-Thiel is is designer for Bless in Berlin; finally, Spijkers and Spijkers, Lidewij Edelkoort, Clemens Rameckers, Arnold van Geuns, Manon Schaap, Jos van Heel, Wendelien Daan, Mariette Hoitink, Jetske Kooi, Joke Robaard, Piet Paris, Marly Nijssen and Saskia van Drimmelen are all Arnhem graduates. And there are many more.

Many of the above are still actively involved with the Fashion Department as teachers or guest teachers. Others provide work placement opportunities at their companies.

The BA course has now been supplemented with two MA courses: Fashion Design and Strategy, and Fashion Institute Arnhem, and there is also a Fashion Lectorate as well as a Fashion Biennale. These courses and institutes are housed in a monumental building by Gerrit Rietveld on the banks of the river Rhine in Arnhem.
