At Lichting 2007 during the Amsterdam International Fashion Week the collection of Ivo Mittelmeijer was voted best graduationcollection of the year and received the KPN TALENT OF THE YEAR AWARD 2007!

The primary objective of the four year course Fashion Design, part of the bachelor Design of ArtEZ Art & Design Arnhem, is to educate students to the highest level in fashion design. Keywords in this are the development of creativity, originality, an understanding of ‘zeitgeist’, a critical ability, the desirable technical skills, and the necessary discipline to function successfully within the professional industry, as an independent designer or within the structure of a company team.
The department does certainly not claim to deliver fully experienced fashion designers, as a four year program is too short in relation to the complexity of the profession and industry. Within a four year course the department rather opts for students to have been introduced to the most relevant aspects of the profession, acquired a ‘toolkit’, and that further experience needs to be gained within the industry itself or through a master course. In general after four years a newly graduated fashion designer needs another four years to learn all the ins and outs of the profession.
To acquire the desirable level the department implies a clear structure: a substructure and a superstructure. In the substructure the propaedeutic first and second year the assignments aim to break through the rusty and cliché thoughts and beliefs about fashion design. The students are introduced to a variety of design methods, developing their own original ideas and of course knowledge of art and design theory. Introductions to visual arts in general and to fashion design in particular. In the superstructure, the third and fourth year, the students grow in depth and develop a more personal signature. A professional attitude is stimulated by means of the minor Collectie Arnhem and the external experience through an internship. They learn how to develop complete collections and finalize the study through a personal graduation project.
The curriculum needs to be adjusted continuously to bring this in line with the demands of the industry.

Fashion was originally a relatively defined domain, but the current developments within the industry forces a designer to have an extensive interdisciplinary approach and specialized skills. To be able to adequately anticipate on this development ArtEZ Fashion Design initiated new outflow profiles, Fashion & Design, Fashion & Image and Fashion & Industry, and minor-programmes towards related design disciplines such as shoe- and accessory design.

The department Fashion Design of ArtEZ is in both the Netherlands and abroad reputable and looks back at a long history in which many designers and fashion-illustrators qualified who thereafter build an illustrious career. The geographically isolated location of Arnhem implies a favourable work climate, one of working hard and dedication to the profession. Within the current trend this isolation needs to be broken and there is a need for creating partnerships. Within ArtEZ there is a close partnership between the so called ‘Fashion-partners’: The bachelor departments of both Fashion Design and Product Design, the Fashion Masters, the Fashion-lectureship and the Arnhem Fashion Biennale.

Both students and alumni are encouraged to participate in both Dutch and international major fashion competitions such as: Lichting and the Frans Molenaar Couture Award in the Netherlands, ITS and the Mittelmoda Fashion Award in Italy, the Createurope Fashion Academy Award and the Apolda European Design Award in Germany, Onward in Japan, and Hyères in France.
In this the knife cuts both ways: the ability for students to match with young designers from renowned training institutes on a global level and to present themselves to the international press and public, and the continuation of international branding and positioning of the department Fashion Design of ArtEZ Art & Design Arnhem itself.

The Fashion Design course at ArtEZ is a program of four years at the level of higher education. The study is part of the Bachelor of Design and is focussed at the designing and executing of fashion collections, but also as the general concept of the phenomenon Fashion itself. The emphasis is on development of creativity, closely followed by practical aspects, craftsmanship and theory. Within the curriculum every course-year has a production period in which students realise their own designs. A course-year has two semesters.
Characteristic for the course are the many contact hours, especially in the first two years. Much time is spend at the academy because intense communication with both teachers and fellow students is essential.
In general the four year study is conducted as follows:

SUBSTRUCTURE

First Year: Learning and Unlearning
Many experimental design assignments. Rusty entrenched ideas are broken and ones own original ideas are stimulated. A first introduction to visual arts in general and to fashion design in particular. Subjects: Experimental Design, Fashion Design, Fashion Drawing, Textiles, Model Drawing, Visual Grammar, Pattern Drawing & Production, Computer Skills, Fashion & Costume, and Art History.
During the first years of training it is possible that one may be given a negative study advice. This will be based on the study results.

Second Year: The foundation of craftsmanship
In the second year the emphasis is on broadening fashion related knowledge and skills.
Fashion Design, Fashion Illustration, Pattern Drawing, Production, Technical Drawing, Textiles & Print Design, Graphic Design, Computer Skills, Fashion & Culture, and Art History. A particularly demanding year with even more contact hours than in the first year. A study of sixty hours per week is not uncommon.
In the second year there will also be a group excursion abroad. These excursions are always in conjunction with important exhibitions such as in 2006 the retrospective on Balenciaga in Paris, in 2009 the Salone del Mobile in Milan and in the autumn of 2009 the retrospective exhibition on Madeleine Vionnet in Paris.

SUPERSTRUCTURE

Third Year: Connecting with the professional industry
The first semester has a full program containing fashion design, knitting, fashion drawing, pattern drawing & production, drapery and the minor Collectie Arnhem: a project in which the third year students design a complete collection as a group, which they then sample, style, present and sell. The students round off this project by presenting and showing the collection at the Amsterdam International Fashion Week. Furthermore the students write a thesis in Art History.
In the second semester all students gain practical experience in the industry at home or abroad for a period of three months. To name a few designers and companies where students of ArtEZ Fashion Design gain this practical experience are: Chloé, Balmain, Lanvin, Rodarte, Vivienne Westwood, John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Christopher Kane, Giles Deacon, Preen, Ann Sofie Back, Hennes & Mauritz Stockholm, Tommy Hillfiger, Isabel Marant, Bernard Willhelm, Walter van Beirendonck, Bruno Pieters, Christian Wijnants, V Magazine, Zero/Maria Cornejo, 3.1 Philip Lim, Henrik Vibskov, The People of the Labyrinths, Francisco van Benthum, Orson & Bodil, Spijkers & Spijkers, Klavers van Engelen, De Bijenkorf, etc.
An intensive design workshop completes the third year in which all experiences gained during the year are brought together.

Fourth Year: Graduation
Design, design, and more design: the whole year is dedicated to developing the students personal design style. Three design teachers focus on different aspects of the course and supervise the design process, while also much attention is given to the development of the portfolio. In the final year each student develops two collections: in the first semester the Toile-de-Luxe collection, and in the second semester the final graduation collection. Through meetings with the associate professors and other design professionals the students are prepared for the world after their graduation. Besides their regular teachers also specially invited external censors are involved in assessing the graduation projects.
In the fourth year every student makes a choice out of three specializations: Fashion & Design, Fashion & Image, and Fashion & Industry. The choice will depend on personal talents and interests, on experiences gained during their internship, and on the advice by the board of teachers. The actual specialization takes place in the second semester.

The four year course Fashion Design, part of the bachelor Design of ArtEZ Art & Design Arnhem has a long and successful history. In 1953 the legendary Elly Lamaker founded within the Academy of Fine Arts Arnhem the department Fashion Design and Fashion Illustration. With only a hand full of students and little by way of resources Fashion Design had to proof itself on all levels. This in relation to the fashion industry and the already existing and comparable courses abroad. She succeeded as we continue to do so.

From there on the department Fashion Design of ArtEZ has continuously expanded. A team of more than twenty professionals now teach more than 125 both national and international students. There are two first year classes each consisting of 22 students. The higher years consist of approximately 25 students per year. Along with teaching most of the teachers also pursue a carrier within the fashion industry.
ArtEZ Fashion Design belongs to the most successful fashion institutions in Europe. The Arnhem Fashion students are frequently nominated and awarded national and international prizes, their achievements finding them a great deal of media attention. In all segments of the fashion industry you can find designers educated in Arnhem.

The bachelor education program has now been supplemented with two Master programs, the ArtEZ Fashion Masters: Master Fashion Design and the Master Fashion Strategy, but also the Arnhem Fashion Biennale and the Fashion Lectureship. All these courses and institutions are housed in the monumental Rietveld-building along the bank of the river Rhine in Arnhem.

After graduation many former students have in various ways profiled themselves in different areas of the fashion world, both national and international. Many of them are still affiliated with the department, either as a teacher, guest lecturer, or providing internships.

Successful former students of ArtEZ Fashion Design:
Viktor & Rolf – Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren – where also Suleyman Demir, Oscar Raaijmakers and Eefje Frankenhuis work with the design team; Lucas Ossendrijver is head-designer for Lanvin Homme; Sander Lak is the designer of the Balmain menswear collection; Hans Demoed and Geert de Rooij conquered the world with The People of the Labyrinths; Alexander van Slobbe is known as the designer of Orson & Bodil and So by Alexander van Slobbe; Jan Schrijver founded the successful brand Gsus, which also employs Ursula Hasham, Mette Visser and Wieteke van Riet as designers; Mark van Vorstenbos is the designer of knitwear label Yarn Unit; Karen Kämena is the designer of knitwear label Iuno; Spijkers & Spijkers, Francisco van Benthum, Aziz Bekkaoui, Jeroen van Tuyl, Marcha Hüskes, Jan Taminiau, Elja Lintsen, Joline Jolink, Daryl van Wouw, Antoine Peters, Edwin Oudshoorn, Sebastiaan Kramer, Sjaak Hullekes, Mattijs van Bergen, Iris van Herpen and Elsien Gringhuis all founded their own label; at the design team of Turnover a lot of former Arnhem students work as designer, such as Mari Buismans, Christine Vos, Baukje Bies and Barbora Papsikova; Pamela Spruyt design prints for O’Neill; Gerjan de Gilde is head designer of Claudia Sträter; Machteld Schouten designs for Sandwich; Frank Muytjens designs for J.Crew; Olga Basten, Wendy Heijne and Anneloes Brunt work as designers at H&M in Sweden; Caroline Melzig-Thiel designs for Bless; Kim Wormgoor designs the swimwear label Kymare; Kaito Hori is the designer of Commuun;
Lidewij Edelkoort, Clemens Rameckers, Arnold van Geuns, Liesbeth in 't Hout, Matthijs Boelee, Lilian Konings, Manon Schaap, Wendelien Daan, Charlotte Bik, Mariette Hoitink, Carlo Wijnands, Jos van Heel, Jetske Kooi, Joke Robaard, Piet Paris, Marly Nijssen and Saskia van Drimmelen are all former students from Arnhem. And there are many more.

The profile of the third year of ArtEZ Fashion Design focuses strongly on the development towards the fashion industry through the external internship in the second semester, and the minor Collectie Arnhem.

Collectie Arnhem is a project in which the third year students design a fashion collection as a group, which they sample, style, present, market and produce. It is the intention that all aspects involved in the practice of designing and selling a collection fit into this project . It is a step towards teamwork, and other than strict design qualities evolve such as business and organizational skills.

The project lasts one course year. The collection is designed and sampled in the first semester, then shown in January at the Amsterdam International Fashion Week (see Video Collection Arnhem 2009>>) after which in the second semester next to the external internship the so-called Production Collectie Arnhem takes place. The students work on the production in shifts before or after their internship.

It is particularly noteworthy that in Collectie Arnhem the department simulates a professional work situation. In reality this project has to be self-financing through collection sales and sponsorship. Collectie Arnhem has also set a trend within fashion education as many other institutes have copied this project.

Requirements

For Dutch students the minimum requirement is HAVO, and for foreign students an equivalent certification. If you do not have the required certification, but are exceptionally talented you may be accepted at the discretion of the admission committee.

Examination

By means of an admission examination the committee will test on visual creative talent, originality and the ability to draw. The examination starts with a fifteen minute interview by the admission committee, existing out of one teacher and two graduation students.

It involves:
- An interview about motivation and general interest.
- An assessment of the portfolio existing out of sketches and designs which give insight in talent and ability.
- An assessment of the so-called home assignment. This is a design assignment that one will receive after registration through Studielink. This assignment needs to be completed at home and must be brought along to the admission interview.

Depending on the outcome of this interview an invitation might follow to return the next day from 10.00 until 16.00 hours to take part in the practical admission exam.

In principle there are two qualification rounds: early February and the end of March. Other rules will be applied in case of admittance to a higher year of the course.

All information about admission can be obtained from the Department of Student Affairs at ArtEZ (studentenzaken@artez.nl).
